Abstract
The Indian insurance sector is undergoing a profound structural transformation driven by rapid
economic formalization, demographic shifts, accelerating digitalization, and the emergence of non
traditional risk vectors. This paper comprehensively examines the landscape of emerging risks in
India, specifically evaluating the systemic impacts of cybersecurity threats, climate-induced
natural catastrophes, and the complex vulnerabilities exposed by evolving public health crises.
Utilizing recent statistical data from the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India
(IRDAI) and global risk indices, we demonstrate how traditional actuarial models are failing to
capture highly correlated, non-linear modern risk environments. The paper provides an elaborated
theoretical framework anchored in Information Asymmetry, Prospect Theory, and Knightian
Uncertainty to analyze why specific insurance gaps persist. Ultimately, the paper outlines
actionable strategic paradigms for the future—including the integration of Artificial Intelligence
(AI), internet-of-things (IoT) driven parametric insurance, and regulatory sandbox structures—to
ensure long-term resilience and expand penetration in the Indian sub-continent.
