Abstract

The rapid development of digital and social media has transformed storytelling from a predominantly print-centred practice into a dynamic process involving text, image, sound, video, animation, hyperlinks, spatial design, and audience interaction. These transformations have significant implications for contemporary English Studies, a discipline traditionally concerned with literary form, language, narrative, interpretation, and cultural representation. Digital platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, blogs, podcasts, and other networked environments increasingly function not merely as channels through which literary content is distributed but as environments that influence how stories are structured, experienced, shared, and interpreted. This chapter examines digital media, social media, and multimodal storytelling as interconnected developments within contemporary English Studies. Drawing upon multimodality, social semiotics, electronic literature, transmedia theory, and online narrative studies, it explores how combinations of linguistic, visual, auditory, gestural, and spatial modes produce new forms of meaning. Particular attention is given to participatory storytelling, digital identity, micro-narratives, transmedia narratives, online communities, and the changing relationship between authors and readers. The chapter also considers the pedagogical significance of digital storytelling for literary and language education. Recent research indicates that multimodal storytelling can encourage language practice, collaboration, digital literacy, creativity, and intercultural engagement. Nevertheless, digital storytelling raises critical questions regarding algorithmic visibility, commercial platform structures, fragmented attention, authenticity, unequal digital access, copyright, misinformation, and the possible privileging of visual appeal over sustained literary complexity. The chapter argues that contemporary English Studies must broaden its analytical practices beyond verbal language while retaining the discipline's commitment to critical interpretation, cultural context, linguistic sensitivity, and ethical evaluation.
